Walking and
bicycling are clean, healthy and fun ways to travel and exercise. That’s why the
San Antonio-Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and our
transportation partners are celebrating 13 years of walking and bicycling with
two exciting events
"Walk & Roll"
events in May 2009.
The
MPO encourages
the use of healthy transportation such as bicycling, walking, car/vanpooling,
and busing.
Show your support of safe and healthy cycling in the San Antonio region
by supporting the
Bicycle Mobility Advisory Committee
and the
Pedestrian Mobility Advisory Committee
by participating in
the Walk & Roll events.
Other healthy activities are included on
this Walk & Roll
website for your information. To submit your organization's event for
inclusion on our website, please
For more information email or call Lydia Kelly at
kelly@sametroplan.org,
or (210) 230-6911.

Upcoming Events
To
promote a better quality of life in the San Antonio region, the Alamo
Area Council of Governments (AACOG) and the San Antonio-Bexar County
Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) challenge area businesses,
public agencies, institutions, and other organizations to practice
"smart miles." Smart miles are efficient and healthy modes of
transportation that reduce our trips to the gas pump, save us money,
improve our air quality, and provide health benefits. These include
such options as carpooling or vanpooling, riding the bus, riding a
bicycle, or walking to work; telecommuting to meetings or work; and
walking to lunch or eating in.
Starting June 1, AACOG and the MPO will conduct the 4th Annual Walk &
Roll Corporate Challenge to reward local organizations whose employees
log the most "smart miles" between June 1 and June 30. Both larger and
smaller organizations with the best collective records will be
recognized for their successes and awarded prizes. The six competition
categories are:
Walking |
Cycling |
Busing
|
Carpooling/Vanpooling |
Telecommuting (record the
mileage you would have traveled if you had physically gone to the
meeting) | Walking to lunch/eating in (for this, you receive
two credit miles)

Regional Urban Forest Conference
The Alamo Forest
Partnership is reaching out to the City of San Antonio and surrounding
communities and asking you to join us for the first annual Regional
Urban Forest Conference. The conference will be held on Friday, July
10, 2009, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 1901 S. Alamo, San Antonio,
Texas.
Trees play a critical
role in providing sustainable and livable communities and their impact
does not stop at city limits or county lines. By coming together to
discuss the issues, we can combine resources and expertise to improve
the communities we live in.
Topics to
be discussed:
-
Tree Inventories
-
Working with Growers
to Increase Tree Species’ Diversity
-
Trees and the San
Antonio River Improvement Project
-
Trees and Energy
-
Round Table Discussion
on Tree Issues Important to Your Community, Business and or
Organization
The conference is free of charge thanks to CPS Energy, but
registration is required and limited.
Click here to register by July 7, 2009. For more information
call (210) 207-8053 or e-mail
Debbie.Reid@sanantonio.gov.
Seeking Volunteers
San Antonio
Sports is currently recruiting volunteers for our upcoming event,
the
TAAF Games of Texas, July 23-26. More than 7,500 boys and girls
from 125 communities across Texas will compete in 20 sports held at 18
venues across the city of San Antonio. The sports range from
badminton, golf, and tennis to soccer, track and field and swimming.
There’s a sport for everyone!
Your organization is invited to help make the TAAF Games of Texas a
success by volunteering. Without the support of over 1300 volunteers,
this event would not be possible, so please register and volunteer
your time to give these young rising athletic stars a chance to shine!
San Antonio Sports offers several ways to register to volunteer:
1) online:
https://2009taaf.theregistrationsystem.com
2) by phone: 210.820.2191 to reach David Blank, volunteer
coordinator
3) on site: schedule a presentation by our volunteer staff and
we’ll register your volunteers at your location.
