Walk & Roll Fest ‘06
The 10th annual Walk & Roll Fest (formerly the Hike & Bike Fest) was attended by over 250 enthusiastic cyclists, walkers, various agency staff and exhibitors at Maverick Park. They enjoyed beautiful, cool weather as they walked and cycled as well as free refreshments, giveaways and musical entertainment upon their return throughout the morning.
Approximately 70 cyclists participated in the 25-mile Historical Mission Tour down to Mission Espada and back along San Antonio’s best known hike and bikeways, Mission Trails. This ride was led by the San Antonio Wheelmen.
Another 25 riders took the South Texas Off-Road Mountain Bikers (STORM)-led 5-mile Family ride from Maverick Park to Brackenridge Park where they traveled some of the newly created hike and bike trails inside the park.
Meanwhile, the Lyn Ward Memorial 5 and 10 km walk designed by the Texas Wanderers drew about 120 walkers. Their route meandered through downtown San Antonio and along the River Walk showing off many historical houses and buildings. Several even brought their pets along for the exercise.
Blue Jam provided the music while a number of exhibits featured health, physical fitness, alternative transportation, and environmental issues including clean air, clean water and greenspace preservation. In addition to providing the venue, stage and sound system, the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department brought over several handcycles for people to see and ride.
